Garbage crisis in Pune - Shilpa Society in Kothrud and Kasturkunj Society in Bhosalenagar offer a permanent solution

DNA Story:

The garbage crisis is once again staring Puneites in the face, writes Rahul Chandawarkar in today's DNA. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has not been able to lift waste for five consecutive days (Feb 24 to 28).

However, he says, instead of complaining and feeling helpless, a few housing societies in Pune city have actually found a permanent solution to the problem. For example, Shilpa Society (183 flats) in Kothrud and Kasturkunja Society (203 flats) in Bhosalenagar.

Rahul has told the inspiring story of Shilpa Society which began wet composting and rainwater harvesting after the garbage depot stir & delayed rain in May 2009.

Bhagyashree Kulthe has told the story of residents of Kasturkunj Society who don't believe in dumping garbage in Urali and Fursungi. Residents are converting their kitchen waste into manure and are nurturing their large lawn and a 3 acre garden!

You like it or not, now, units in various wards will process garbage from the same area, warns Abhay Khairnar in his story. Because, mayor Mohansingh Rajpal has recommended "the decentralized processing of garbage at the 14 ward offices of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

It means, you have to follow Smita Kulkarni, the chairman of Kasturkunj Society and develop the habit of segregating your waste and set up garbage disposal projects in your society. A permanent solution which saves money and pollution. Read More
